  1. THIS WEEK IN GEARS 5 This Week In Gears 5 is our quick-fire Monday update to fill you in on everything happening in-game for Gears 5 over the next week! Here’s what’s coming up for the week of March 3rd – 10th: PLAYLIST UPDATE Beginning on Tuesday, March 3rd, we’ll be making some key changes to the format of our Quickplay offerings as part of an ongoing trial: New Playlist Order (from left to right): Free For All, TDM & KOTH, Arcade, Co-Op vs AI Classic Quickplay: TDM and KOTH only. Removed Guardian, Arms Race, Execution, Dodgeball. TDM in Classic Quickplay: 1 round to win, 20 respawns (was 2 rounds to win, 15 respawns) Our intention behind these changes are the following: Improve our Quickplay offerings to get you to the experiences you want to play Put our most popular modes front and center We use data heavily to understand the behavior of our players. One of the things we’ve consistently seen since Gears 3 is that TDM and KOTH are both our highest populated / voted for modes. We want to put our best experiences front and center in Quickplay, making sure they are easy to discover and play in without having to necessarily dive into Ranked. In addition, we hope the new ordering of Quickplay playlists will result in more players in FFA, giving you faster time to matches and a bigger spotlight on a mode we know many of you love. (Fun fact: Most players who are new to Gears go to the first menu option in Versus, which will now be Quickplay FFA!). We know that some of you out there are die-hard fans of modes like Dodgeball and Arms Race, and that this is likely a tough pill to swallow for you. It was a tough call for us to make too. Ultimately, our goal is to make the game the best it possibly can be. To do that, sometimes we’re going to try some stuff and see what happens. We may get this right or we may not. The plus side is both modes will continue to be available in Public Lobbies but also in Events, where we hope putting a spotlight on them for shorter periods will make them shine brighter thanks to more players and a consistently accessible experience vs fighting votes in Quickplay. Regardless, we’ll be out there reading your feedback as well as monitoring data to determine the full impact of the trial. VERSUS EVENT: DODGEBALL With Dodgeball sunset in Quickplay as part of our new playlist trial, this week we’ll be hosting Dodgeball as our featured Versus event! We’ve also taken one of your favorite parts of our Halloween Dodgeball event – the fast respawns – and added it to this playlist to keep the action flowing. SUPPLY UPDATE: MARIA WEAPON SKINS We saw a great response to the Maria Weapon Skins (Loadout Only) during our Valentine’s Event – so much so that we’ve decided to complete the set and add the rest of the weapon skins to the Supply Pool! Craft or find them in Supply now. 4. WHAT'S UP – FEBRUARY 27TH 2020 Welcome to the new What’s Up, our weekly blog where we’ll recap everything that’s happened in the past week and talk a little about future developments. In What’s Up this week: Title Update 4.1.1 Released Free Boost Weekend Escape Double Character XP Weekend Escape Earnable Content Change Arcade Blitz Double Trouble + Second Chance to Earn Punt Execution TU 4.1.1 As we mentioned on Monday, Title Update 4.1.1 has been moving through Certification towards a hopeful release this week. We’re happy to confirm it made it through nice and timely, so we’re deploying another hotfix right this second! Here’s the full update notes for our mini-hotfix TU 4.1.1 released as of 10am PT today: GAMEPLAY Additional fixes for AI enemies finishing downed players too quickly Fixed an issue that could cause the Flashbang effect to remain on screen if a player died while the filter effect still occurred. (We will be monitoring player reports to determine if this repro is a full fix for the issue) Horde: Resource Tap claim time set to 5s (was 10s) Map Builder: Fixed an issue causing a user to get an error messaging after returning to the editor from the Escape Pause Menu PC Mouse: Fixed an issue that caused Gnasher shots to sometimes hit slightly to the left after a weapon switch on PC following the release of TU 4.1 Multiple crash fixes We have another TU coming, targeted for mid March, delivering further improvements and a juicy surprise for Horde fans. Teases! FREE BOOST AND 2X CHARACTER XP WEEKEND In case you missed the news, we’re dropping a Free Boost Weekend again beginning this Friday along with Double Character XP in Escape! If you aren’t usually rolling with Boost, this means you’ll earn 4x the usual rate of Character XP. Pick your favorite character and bathe in faster levelling until Monday. ESCAPE EARNABLE CONTENT CHANGE With today’s Title Update, we’ve made an additional change to the format of our Escape Leaderboards. If you didn’t already know, Escape Leaderboards provide a variety of cosmetic rewards based on your placement. The pinnacle cosmetic rewards for Escape Hives require you to place in the Top 1% and hold it until the next rewards rotation. Previously, the Top 1% banding represented an achievable goal for top end players. As time has gone on, more players have become masters of the Escape Meta with max level Characters equipped with high level skills, resulting in the Top 1% shifting from the top end of players to the super elite teams of players only. We know earnable content is important to players, as is having content that showcases a higher level of skill. Beating a Hive on the top difficulties in it’s first few weeks of release is a massive achievement, and we want more players to feel rewarded for their efforts. As such, we are increasing the top-end Hive leaderboard rewards from 1% to 5% in a live update beginning today at 1pm PT. We believe this change will retain the value of pinnacle Hive rewards, while offering high-end teams a better chance at obtaining the best rewards. We are looking at what else we can do for Escape Leaderboards, including the potential of non-cosmetic high end rewards for the top percentiles, for future updates. We’ve also heard loud and clear that you want the opportunity to have another shot at past Escape Leaderboard rewards. Beginning on Tuesday, we’ll be bringing back The Gauntlet, followed two weeks later by The Descent, into matchmaking along with their leaderboard rewards. These Hives represent two of the least completed Hives on Master due to their major difficulty spikes. Not only do these make for great candidates for re-runs at past rewards because of this, but with TU4.2, we’ll be updating both Hives to balance out some of the issues that made them unfairly tough at times. *Note: With TU4.2 tracking for mid-March, The Gauntlet will be as it was when it first released for at least the first week of it’s appearance Stay tuned for final details on the TU4.2 date soon. THIS WEEK IN GEARS We mistakenly called out the Punt Execution being earnable through the Big Game Medal in our This Week in Gears post – it’s actually the Spike Execution. Sorry about that. Our mistake is your gain though, as we’re adding the Punt Execution as a login reward during our Free Boost Weekend! Just fire up Gears 5 and head to the main menu to pick it up if you missed out last time. You’ll still be able to go and earn the Spike Execution through the Big Game Medal For full information on all things Gears 5 this week, you can read the full article here. SIGNING OFF It’s short and sweet this week as we continue work on polishing up Operation 3 and delivering future improvements. Next week, we’re aiming to have news on TU 4.2 as well as that little Horde teaser we dropped earlier. Until then. TC, out.

We wish Rod all the best as we continue the Gears journey here at TC. You can find out more about what this means for the future in this interview with Matt Booty (Head of Xbox Game Studios) over at GamesIndustry.biz. VALENTINE’S EVENT Next week it’s time for some romantic late night dates slaying it up online with the return of Cupid’s Torque Bow Tag! (pictured above) Look out for all the details in Monday’s This Week In Gears. RANKING TIER CHANGES Some of you may have noticed changes earlier this week to your Ranked Tier; we have re-calibrated our Ranking Tiers to better reflect your actual Skill Rating based on your Tier points. This may have resulted in some movement (mostly upwards) of your Tier, but it will now provide a clearer, more trackable path as you work towards progressing to the next Tier. Below are the new tier thresholds. These thresholds will be integrated into the UI in a future title update. This is another step in improving the ranking system – as it is our top-priority at the studio. We are actively investigating opportunities to improve the system. We’ll keep you apprised if anything develops out of that process. THIS WEEK IN GEARS 5 In case you missed it, This Week in Gears 5 tee-d up the next 7 days with a look ahead at everything going on in the world of Gears 5. This week included: Free For All OSOK New Hive ‘The Blight’ Two Versus Event Tour Medals added Weekly Store refresh On Tuesday, we updated Free For All OSOK to reduce body-shot damage to minimal levels, making headshots the only way to get a kill! If you’ve been waiting for headshot only OSOK, jump in now before the event ends on Tuesday. For full information on all these events and updates, you can read the full article here. SIGNING OFF It’s been a quieter week here on the outbound front, but we have plenty of updates coming up in the near future. We’re currently assessing a potential hotfix following our work to address several key issues that have emerged since TU4. We’ll keep you apprised of any potential hotfix as we get confirmation of our plans. Our team have also been hard at work on our next game mechanics update, this time focused specifically on the Gnasher. Following our movement mechanics update launched with TU3, this next wave of changes will focus on restoring more of the two-shot gameplay present at launch into the new movement model. We see this as an important part of our development of the core mechanics to achieve a more responsive, fun second-to-second experience with the depth of gameplay you expect from Gears. Once we deploy these changes, we’ll be monitoring your feedback to determine any next changes to the movement or Gnasher. Look out for full details on the Gnasher changes within the next week. There’s plenty more going on at the studio right now, but expect to hear more on these topics coming up in the near future. If you have any burning questions, make sure to join us today on our Gears Weekly Developer Stream for some candid answers. Tune in at live.gearsofwar.com from 3pm PT. We hope to see you there. Until next week. TC, out. The Letter L Mark – 50 Iron
  8. What's Up – January 20th 2020 Welcome to What’s Up, your weekly update on all the latest news, game updates and more in Gears 5 and beyond. Here’s What’s Up in Gears this week: Title Update 4 arrives Tuesday, January 21st New Kantus Villain Gnasher improvements coming in TU4 and beyond Icebound Map Changes TU4 Update Notes Lunar New Year Versus Event New Hive: The Line Weekly Store Update New Villain: Kantus As a reminder, the Kantus Villain arrives with the release of Title Update 4! You can learn about the Kantus’ Totem Challenges and Arcade setup here. If you’ve purchased the Operation 2: Free For All bundle, the Kantus will be automatically added to your inventory for FREE. And if you haven’t purchased the Operation 2 bundle yet, the Kantus will be added to the existing bundle with no increase to the price of the bundle. Character Release Schedule Adding to an existing Store Bundle while also ensuring we get the Kantus to previous bundle purchasers means a slightly different release schedule than usual. As always, there will be an approx. 2 hour period between the release of the TU and the appearance of new content. However, slightly we’ll have a second live update to activate the Kantus for individual Iron purchases. Here’s what to expect on Tuesday January 21st: ~10am PT: Title Update 4 rolls out available for download. The Kantus will not be available. ~12:30pm – 1pm PT: Live Update 1 deployed (includes Gnasher magnetism fixes). Kantus becomes available to earn through the Kantus Totem. Existing Operation 2: Free For All bundle owners will receive the Kantus Character. This may take up to 1-2 hours to appear. You will need to relaunch the title to test if your Character has appeared. Kantus Character is added to the Operation 2: Free For All bundle. ~3pm PT: Live Update 2 deployed. The Kantus is available for individual purchase through the Store. Stay tuned for news on each phase of the rollout by following @CoalitionGears on Twitter. Gnasher Improvements Late last week, we posted the results of our extensive investigation into the Gnasher, including some new fixes coming in TU4 to return it to its pre-TU3 consistency and further improvements to come in the future. If you missed the news, head on over to our blog from last week. Icebound Map Updates As part of our work to improve Gears 5, the Multiplayer Level Designers have been working on continued improvements to existing maps. As avid players – and avid readers of feedback – they are constantly thinking about small refinements and improvements we can make that will have a big impact to the experience on their maps. They’ve already made spawn exit improvements to Exhibit, and the next changes to come are a sweeping series of refinements to Icebound. For Icebound, the overall goal of these changes is to provide more ways to counter the strong rifle positions of the towers, which in turn will make the ice-lake a more utilized traversal and combat area than it is today. Layout Change: The mantle cover at the top of each tower’s slope slide as now been removed. This adds a new vulnerable flank to allow this strong position to be countered more easily. Weapon Layout Changes: The weapon layout has been modified to provide more options to counter the strong tower positions and allow players to traverse the ice area more easily. Lock: Frag Grenades have been removed and replaced with a Dropshot Middle Ice: Cryo Cannon has moved to the center of the ice, replacing the original Dropshot location Trading Post: Cryo Cannon has been moved and is now a Torque Bow Market/Radio: Boltoks have been replaced with Enforcers Stable Spawn/Power Spawn: Incendiaries and Shock Grenades remain the same KOTH: The ground level tower rings (at the bottom of the slides) have moved into the interior of the towers where the Enforcer spawns. Player spawns have been updated to cater towards these changes. Escalation: There are now 3 weapon placement slots on the center line, up from 2. This is to be at parity with all the other maps. Title Update 4 Notes Title Update 4 releases on Tuesday, January 21st at ~10am PT. Gnasher Updates Learn more about the Gnasher improvements in TU4 and beyond in our blog here. We’re working on new ways to keep you updated about the progress of development when it comes to addressing issues, bugs and needed improvements in a broader way than our 1-1 responses or weekly streams usually reach. Movement is our next focus for a blog spotlight, within which our goal is to provide a clear look at where we are now and where we want to go with movement in Gears 5. We feel like outlining this in clear and transparent terms is an important part of having a continued dialogue on the topic with all of you. In the meantime, please do join us each week for our Weekly Developer Streams for a direct way to ask the questions you want answered, or post in /r/GearsofWar or our official forums.
