Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games

Closing Comments
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is a really good competitive game that's a better multiplayer outing than a solo one. Even though it looks and sounds great, the DS version of the title loses a bit of its impact due to its "me too" design against a slightly superior one that launched almost three months prior. Cheers to the designers to keep the game interesting with tons of modes and events, but jeers in their sloppy implementation of Worldwide features and repeating some events (like Fencing) that didn't really work on the Wii edition.

7.0 Presentation
Lots of events and mini-games, but it's paced a little sluggish and its interface slightly awkward.

8.5 Graphics
Really excellent 3D engine that displays on both screens. It's not going to look quite as nice as the Wii version, but for Nintendo DS standards this 3D is top-notch.

8.0 Sound
A good amount of Mario and Sonic-esque music and voice samples from each of the 16 characters. The announcer is kept to a minimum,

7.5 Gameplay
Single player isn't entirely tough, and the world records are pretty easy to beat. The real challenge and fun comes from multiplayer.

8.0 Lasting Appeal
Lots of different challenge structures to play, and tons of missions to complete. Multiplayer is through single and multicart, so you're all good to go.

7.8

Indianapolis 500 Legends

http://ds.ign.com/ar...9/849336p1.html

Closing Comments
In the end though, Indy 500 Legends is still constrained on DS as it was on Wii, as its historic roots make it true-to-form, but thin on overall fun. If youre a previous Indianapolis 500 racing fan, youll have fun with the game, as you get to race as legends, relive actual moments in racing history, and drive cars inspired from that era. Since its all tethered to specific years, however, the single player mode will have all racers and ride predetermined, with no vehicle tweaking or customization to be had. On the audio/visual side, Indy 500 DS has a very similar look (using the same single Indy 500 track, redesigned for each era), but doesnt have the authentic audio experience that the Wii version did, with actual recorded car audio from the historic Indianapolis 500 museum. All full video intros and VO, however, were included.

5.0 Presentation
Touch interface is met with some simple visuals. Full video intros are included as well for each era, but theyre the majority of all front-end presentation.

5.0 Graphics
Nothing special on the visual front. The frame rate stays solid, but the cars, track detail, and on-screen action is kept to a minimum.

5.0 Sound
The authentic engine sounds are missed from the DS version, but some VO remains. Licensed music was dropped for generic guitar riffs.

5.0 Gameplay
It works, but it isnt groundbreaking in any respect. The racing physics arent entirely there, but the touch control works fine.

5.0 Lasting Appeal
If youre an Indianapolis 500 fan, theres some interesting history here. Anyone else may want to wait for a more ambitious sequel, or find portable racing elsewhere.

Zoo Tycoon 2

http://ds.ign.com/ar...9/849486p1.html

Closing Comments
People either like Tycoon games, or they don't. In that respect, Zoo Tycoon 2 is a decent choice for a handheld economic sim since it has all the features of a good sim game, but shortens it to be able to play for couple minute increments. For gamers that have somehow not developed an opinion on the genre, or for that new generation of young gamers-to-be, Zoo Tycoon 2 is a simple, decently paced title that still has a good amount of hands on interactivity. Like we've said before, animals are the best veil to hide education behind, and this game has plenty of opportunity for learning. Just don't get mad at us if you're kid starts asking why there are no unicorns at your local zoo.

6.5 Presentation
The menu system has been improved, and is pretty easy to navigate, despite the lack of text labels.

6.0 Graphics
The overview mode is better, but still not very pleasant on the eyes. The 3D animals are pretty cool though, and there are a lot of them.

7.5 Sound
The background music is not too shabby, and players unlock multiple, switchable tracks through the game.

7.0 Gameplay
It's a really simple simulation game, but the campaign offers some interesting scenarios and sneaks education in instead of bashing the player over the head with it.

7.5 Lasting Appeal
Veteran Tycoon fans will blitz through the Campaign in a weekend. Younger gamers, the target audience, will last longer. Plus the Free Play mode and unlockables keep the game going.

7.0

Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 DS UK Review

http://ds.ign.com/ar...9/849935p1.html

Imagen Enviada

Closing Comments
It really is quite a struggle to recommend Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 on any level whatsoever. Pro Evolution 6 was already a fairly weak offering, and the latest installment brings so very little to the party. With FIFA already offering a fairly respectable portrayal of the sport on the DS, theres no reason to even consider purchasing Pro Evolution Soccer 2008; its a redundant retread of already barren ground, failing as both an update or a standalone title. Its the Titus Bramble of football games largely inadequate, lacking any flair and ultimately raising the question just what is the point.

4.5 Presentation
Minimal and with a child-like orientation, the menus at least lack the inane soundtrack of the next-gen versions.

3.5 Graphics
The leaden characters fail to live up to even PSone standards. And it still suffers from slowdown.

4.0 Sound
The commentary is limited to one phrase - which in light of the obtuse ramblings on the next-gen versions is a relief.

5.5 Gameplay
Not actually broken in any way, and a fair game of football will sometimes arise - but nothing that isn't done much better elsewhere.

5.5 Lasting Appeal
A decent suite of multiplayer options, plus the engaging World Tour mode, means if you endeavour the game does have legs.

4.7
Poor OVERALL

Bomberman Land Touch 2

http://ds.ign.com/ar...0/850852p1.html

Imagen Enviada

Closing Comments
As a standalone package, Bomberman Land Touch! 2 is a wholly recommended Nintendo DS game: the mini-games are fun, the adventure is fulfilling, and the multiplayer support is an absolute blast. But for those who've already fronted the thirty bucks for the original game, it might be a harder sell: unless you really think you're going to get something more out of the Bomberman story by plowing through the adventure game, and unless you're really itching for a handful of additional features in your Bomberman multiplayer experience, you might want to sit this one out.

7.0 Presentation
Apart from the selection of mini-games, the storyline that's tying them together, and the updated Battle Pack, this is Bomberman Land Touch all over again.

6.5 Graphics
Same old-school sprite visuals from the 2006 release.

7.0 Sound
The happy bippy soundtrack seems to be a bit catchier this time around. Maybe because it reminds us a heck of a lot of Kirby.

8.5 Gameplay
Many ups and some downs in the mini-game collection, but Battle Pack multiplayer is still the king of the cartridge here.

9.0 Lasting Appeal
The sequel seems to have attracted fewer online gamers, but if you can find other people, either local over the internet, you'll find a game you can come back to over and over.

The Spiderwick Chronicles

http://ds.ign.com/ar...0/850899p1.html

Closing Comments
Playing The Spiderwick Chronicles took me back to old-school adventure games like Alice in Wonderland on the Apple II. It recreates that feeling of being a kid and suspending your disbelief in fantasy. Much of this success in setting a mood and creating an intriguing world to explore is attributable to Holly Black's original books. But I have to give credit to developer Stormfront for creating a fun game to go inside the Spiderwick license. The graphics aren't much to look at, the environments need more variety, and checkpoints don't come along often enough. But there is a big area to delve into, the music is great, and there are lots of options in combat. There's something new to find around every corner, and that's something I can't say about enough games.

7.0 Presentation
A 6-page, black & white manual. Outside of the main game there aren't any bells or whistles.

6.0 Graphics
Bland. It's a shame, too, because the books are very well-illustrated.

8.0 Sound
Creepy bells and haunted music boxes.

8.0 Gameplay
Lots to explore and discover. The battle system is engaging.

5.5 Lasting Appeal
The quest is a little short, and once it's done it's done.

7.8
Good OVERALL

My Horse and Me

http://ds.ign.com/ar...1/851267p1.html

Imagen Enviada

Closing Comments
My Horse and Me is a functional game, but that certainly doesnt make it a fun game. Perhaps nobody on the development team has even a passing interest in the animal, so didn't bother to make the game fun for the target audience. They got as far as to make the game work, but then stopped. It's great that there are some fun minigames, but that effort should have been used to make a game that plays well or looks remotely good. The fact of the matter is there are better, and worse, horse games for the DS out there. Nothing new is offered or improved upon, making My Horse and Me entirely forgettable.

4.5 Presentation
Players can customize their horse and rider, but everything is so detached and awkward in this game. It's like "Somebody Else's Horse and Them."

5.5 Graphics
Decent animation and model, but there is only one horse with a few skin switches. The trainers all look like jerks for some reason.

5.0 Sound
You can record your voice saying the horse's name, giving you a garbled playback that sounds like the horse is trying to say it.

4.5 Gameplay
A couple of the minigames are fun, but the rest of the game is either scribbling or just pressing A. Nothing even comes close to being a simulation.

4.0 Lasting Appeal
Players will blast through it easily, and there's no real reason to try and improve since there is no real reward system.

4.3
Poor OVERALL

Civilization Revolution

http://ds.ign.com/ar...1/851310p1.html

"In all, our time with the game revealed it to be a very different creature from the PC version but still undeniably a part of the Civilization franchise. For this version the developers have decided to strip away everything but the essentials (of which there are many) and then heighten and exaggerate those essential elements to an extreme level. It's not entirely clear yet if console players have an appetite for a turn-based strategy game at this scale but Civilization: Revolutions has tremendous potential to enlarge the strategy genre on the consoles."

Professor Layton and the Curious Village

http://ds.ign.com/ar...1/851856p1.html

Closing Comments
Professor Layton and the Curious Village is just one of at least three adventures for the top-hatted puzzle solving aristocrat. The Japanese love the guy, and after playing his premiere Nintendo DS game its easy to see why those gamers are nuts for Professor Layton. Its not quite as powerful a game as some diehards might lead you to believe it is, and the cheating exploits are a little to obvious to ignore. But even so, Professor Layton is undeniably fun with a great style, and if the next game in the series is as challenging and addictive as his debut, bring it on.

8.0 Presentation
Love the characters, love the art style, and love the cutscene animations. The game has easy to exploit cheats...just don't do it.

8.0 Graphics
The European influence is a breath of fresh air in this oversaturated anime world.

8.0 Sound
The voice acting is splendid. It's a shame it's only used during specific points of the adventure.

8.0 Gameplay
A fun point-and-click adventure with a focus on actual mindbender puzzles for the challenge. You've seen a lot of these puzzles before, but they're still pretty tough.

7.5 Lasting Appeal
Really decent length for an adventure game with an impressive stack of puzzles. Once you know the answers, though, replaying the puzzles is little silly.

Spore

http://ds.ign.com/ar...1/851789p1.html

"All in all, Spore Creatures is a very handsome package and was a pleasant surprise unique and adept, it will serve as both an accompaniment to the main Spore experience as well as providing the DS with an exceptionally polished action adventure. We look forward to having an extended look some point in the near future."

Race Driver: Grid

http://ds.ign.com/ar...1/851755p1.html

"While it seems that GRID on the more powerful consoles is making huge strides to move on from its past, the DS iteration is more of a case of slow evolution. Only an extended look will reveal whether there is enough additional content to tempt those already in possession of the original Race & Create, but regardless it looks again to provide a compelling and unrivalled racing experience on the DS."
