Teenage Zombies: Invasion of the Alien Brain Thingys Review

The tamest zombies you'll ever see.

Closing Comments

I want to like Teenage Zombies: Invasion of the Alien Brain Thingys more. Don't get me wrong, it's a decent game as it is, but it just seems like it should have been so much more. After the voice-acted story at the beginning and a fun and interesting premise, we wanted the game to be equally funny and engaging. The gameplay is fun enough, but it contrasts with what the game presents itself to be. It offers some decent puzzle platforming, though the game never becomes very challenging. The touch screen minigames are hit or miss and the game actually isn't very long. Teenage Zombies is not a bad game at all, it's just hard to recommend it.

7.5 Presentation
The story presentation is great, but the game doesn't manage to hold on to the charm as much.

6.5 Graphics
Pretty basic and old-school. The sprites don't have many animations, since they don't do much anyway,

6.5 Sound
There's a disappointingly low amount of voicework, but it's well done. Seems like there should be more sound effects.

7.0 Gameplay
Puzzles and platforming. It's fun but it's not very challenging. The minigames are just okay.
6.5 Lasting Appeal
The game is best is small chunks, but if you go through it in one go the 33 levels won't a really long time.

6.8
Passable OVERALL

The World Ends With You Review

Square Enix and the makers of Kingdom Hearts create one of the best games on DS.

http://ds.ign.com/ar...7/867129p1.html

Closing Comments

Few games make it into the amazing category in our opinion, but with a game that sets as many standards, breaks down as many walls, stomps as many preconceptions, and offers as much depth and versatility as The World Ends With You, we simply cant consider it anything but exactly that. Square Enix and Jupiter took a chance on this one, as it would have been just as easy to release another Final Fantasy, Mana, or Dragon Quest game in its place, but instead the company went for a long shot in creating something truly unique and imaginative, and the result is not only one of the best DS games out there, but also one of the top RPGs weve played in years.

Whether youre a fan of the art style or not, or if the dual screen combat is just too hectic for your tastes, theres still no denying the games impressive ability to create an immersive, alive world on Nintendos pocket platform, complete with beautiful and inspired music, matchless art design, and pioneering individuality in gameplay. It stands toe to toe with The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass in this reviewers opinion, and will hold the title for being one of DSs freshest and most imaginative experiences long after the system falls to the wayside. Games like this come once in a systems lifetime, and shouldnt be ignored.

8.5 Presentation
The interface is slick and touch-controlled, but itll take a serious investment to learn how everything works. Storytelling could be a bit more dynamic. Portraits and text feels dated.

9.0 Graphics
A 2D marvel, using 3D to tie everything together. Impressive effects animation, beautiful character design, and great usage of both screens together.

9.0 Sound
One of the best sound tracks on DS, rivaling the likes of Final Fantasy and Zelda. The mix of hip hop and techno sets the groundwork for the games mood.

9.0 Gameplay
The mix of options and dual screen control is unparalleled. Some touch attacks work better when combined with others (based on similar strokes), but its truly original.

9.0 Lasting Appeal
Local wireless Tin Pin Slammers mode is a neat extra mode, but nothing more. 300+ pins, endless customization, and out of game options make this a must-play.

9.0
Outstanding OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

The World Ends With You AU Review

A fantasy and fashion fusion becomes an unexpected DS classic.

Closing Comments

If we haven't made it explicitly clear so far (or you're one of those shameless readers who just skip to the end and if so, for shame), this is going to be the cult-hit DS game of 2008. Jupiter and Square Enix have developed a game that nails just about everything it tries and it tries quite a lot of new or carefully lifted ideas. The story, which occasionally gets bogged down in silly or overly-reactive dialogue and situations, will definitely keep you hooked throughout the adventure.

Even with this extensive write-up, there's no question that there are elements we haven't touched on that should be discovered for yourselves. The setting won't appeal to everyone (again, suggesting eventual cult-status), but the unique style and combat is so worth your time that it's hard to get too bogged down in minor quirks and faults. Another Square Enix gem, then. Here's hoping this becomes a series, because it's got all the hallmarks of a true classic.

9.0 Presentation
The best use of two screens for maps, info, menus and stylish touches that we've seen in a long time.

9.0 Graphics
Superb 2D with fluid battle animations, scrolling, layered city streets and slick, if simplistic, cutscenes. Trademark style.

9.0 Sound
Love the J-Pop soundtrack and loving attention to world sounds and small menu soundbytes. A little more voice acting would've pushed this score even higher.

9.0 Gameplay
The most inventive, striking RPG to come from the house of Square Enix in a long time. The combat is a treat, but it'll take time to master.

9.0 Lasting Appeal
Collecting all the pins, outfits, foods, items and so on will take a long while. Plus, there's the simple multiplayer, communication functions and unlocks.

9.1
Outstanding OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

George of the Jungle Review

The Search for the Secret isn't a long one.

Closing Comments

There are certainly many worse games on the DS coasting on a children's license. But there are enough things wrong with George of the Jungle to keep me from recommending it. It looks ok and sounds great, but it's really short and the mini-games are tiresome. But if your son or daughter just has to have a George of the Jungle game, definitely go with the DS version over the console editions.

4.0 Presentation
The bare-bones manual doesn't even explain the power-ups. And why doesn't that giraffe have a body?!

7.0 Graphics
For the most part characters are animated well and the jungle is bright and colorful.

7.5 Sound
There isn't a ton of music, but what's here is surprisingly good.

5.5 Gameplay
A basic platformer interspersed with ridiculous and tedious mini-games.

3.5 Lasting Appeal
Very, very short and nothing to do once it's over.

5.4
Mediocre OVERALL

Imagine: Figure Skater Review

One of the better installments of Ubisoft's female-focused Imagine serie

http://ds.ign.com/ar...4/864483p1.html

Closing Comments

It's been hard to guess just what you'll get when tearing off the shrink-wrap of one of Ubisoft's Imagine series DS titles, as the quality of its products have been both acceptable and untouchable in the past. But Imagine: Figure Skater improves the branding's overall track record, with a perfectly playable simulation of skating life. It can be tedious to trudge through this game's forced storyline and discouraging that you can't immediately execute the most masterful of maneuvers on the ice, but overall this game is a good value that's certainly worth a look for young ladies interested in the sport of skating.

And the curling mini-game rocks.

6.0 Presentation
Imagine: Figure Skater casts you as a young, up-and-coming skater and puts a fair amount of focus on its story. The plot often feels forced, though.

6.5 Graphics
Fair 3D sees your skater twirling and whirling around on the ice, while 2D anime-style drawings illustrate characters during dialogue sequences.

5.5 Sound
The music is mediocre, mostly due to repetitiveness. Additionally, the voice clips coming from your skater can get boring too.

7.0 Gameplay
Figure skating's leaps and spins translate well into DS touch screen elements, with scribbling and tracing forming the foundation of the design.

7.5 Lasting Appeal
The well-conceived curling mini-game could have alternative ice sports fanatics flocking back again and again. The main story mode is fairly lengthy.

6.5
Passable OVERALL

Diary Girl Review

Go get a real diary.

http://ds.ign.com/ar...7/867900p1.html

Imagen Enviada

Closing Comments

There are a lot of features in Diary Girl, but the sum value of all of them doesnt make the game worth its price tag. The fact of the matter is that most of the features are just not that useful. The games arent that fun, the chat is redundant and the diary feature is less useful and more effort than just physically writing in a diary. Making lame versions of a bunch of different things isn't a recipe for success. It's definitely no secret that Diary Girl is not worth your money.

4.5 Presentation
The touch screen menus are not labled, making it hard to figure out what the hell we're doing.

5.5 Graphics
The style is cute enough, but there just isn't a lot here. Just a paper doll to look at.

4.0 Sound
The sound is so forgettable, I'm having trouble even remembering what it was like, and I just played the game 5 minutes ago.

4.5 Gameplay
It's not really a game. there are minigames, and they suck. The calendar is decent, but not worth 30 bucks.

5.0 Lasting Appeal
It's designed to be used long term, but the minigames last for a day, and the accessories are all unlocked in short order.

4.5
Poor OVERALL

Fantasy Aquarium Review

This game needs to sleep with the fishes.

http://ds.ign.com/ar...8/868425p1.html

Imagen Enviada

Closing Comments

The only fantasy with this aquarium is the fantasy the developer's had that this would be fun for anyone. Not only does this game look terrible, it offers no gameplay to really speak of. There's not even an educational value since it never tries to teach any facts. It is genuinely more fun just to go to the local aquarium once. The price is about the same (maybe cheaper) and the experience will last longer. Fantasy Aquarium belongs at the bottom of the ocean.

1.0 Presentation
Hi, developers? Can I get just an ounce of effort here? Maybe label the menu buttons or something?

3.5 Graphics
Everything looks hideous and the fish just loop in animation. Dolphin swims left, swims right, goes up for air.

3.0 Sound
Like the soundtrack to Ecco, remade by some guy in his apartment.

1.0 Gameplay
Watch the fish. You can like... feed them too.

1.0 Lasting Appeal
You're bored to death when it starts, and it only gets worse.

1.0
Abysmal OVERALL

Recomiendo muchísimo el Profesor Layton (si os gustan los acertijos) y el The world ends with you (si os va el rol)

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time Review

Chunsoft's Mystery Dungeon design gets recycled for another outing.

http://ds.ign.com/ar...8/868637p1.html

Imagen Enviada

5.5 Presentation
Very clunky use of the DS capabilities. Menu systems, button combinations, touch screen control are all just mediocre. At least the story's fun.

5.5 Graphics
Not much of an excuse this time; the original game was made for GBA standards, but this one's a DS exclusive. Nothing wrong with the simple pixel art, but it all just feels a little lazy.

6.0 Sound
Some music's catchy while other pieces are forgettable. Many of the sampled sounds are pretty bad, though.

6.5 Gameplay
Once again, it's a solid but repetitive RPG. If you love the Chunsoft Mystery Dungeon design, you'll probably like this one too.

8.0 Lasting Appeal
Some cool advancements in Wi-Fi Connection on top of what Chunsoft did in Shiren the Wanderer.

Rondo of Swords Review

Unleash your inner masochist with Atlus's latest strategy RPG.

http://ds.ign.com/ar...8/868683p1.html

Closing Comments

We feel like a broken record when it comes to Atlus titles on DS, but it still rings true. In most cases, you already know if youre a fan of the companys products, and if you like one, youll most likely enjoy (or at least appreciate) them all. Some are more mainstream than others, but Rondo of Swords feels like the exact opposite of games like Trauma Center or even Odin Sphere, and is a title thatll seem to lurk in the darkest corner of the strangest game shops out there. It joins the ranks of games like Lumious Arc, Etrian Odyssey, and Summon Knight as titles that some gamers will never hear of, but others swear by. Its simple, visually basic, but very difficult and rewarding as well. It isnt Fire Emblem, and it isnt Final Fantasy Tactics. Its Rondo of Swords: A simple, challenging, entertaining turn-based strategy that dares to be different, and succeeds despite its flaws. If thats your cup of tea, by all means drink up.

6.0 Presentation
Very simple, but also easy to use. The storytelling is very basic though, with single-screen scrolling text and portrait-based dialogue sessions.

6.0 Graphics
Nothing here that cant be done on GBA, but it stays quick and stylistic throughout. It may not be a looker, but its smooth and to the point.

6.0 Sound
Again, very simple. A few snippets of VO and basic melodies make up the audio experience. Theres nothing intrusive, but no real reason to play with audio on full blast either.

7.0 Gameplay
Its hard, but its also very fresh, fun, and rewarding because of its difficulty. If you can handle the design which was made specifically for the hardcore youll h

6.5 Lasting Appeal
Getting the best ending possible will take some serious time, but once its over, its over. Theres no online or vs. mode of any kind, as its more Fire Emblem than Advance Wars.

Look, I understand: its got Pokemon in it so youre going to buy this game regardless of what I say about it. I dont think its bad, but its hard to hide my lack of enthusiasm towards Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. Its a dated game design thats been recycled out of an underwhelming original game from a year ago. This sequel comes off lazy and clumsily produced; sure, the games got some fun and challenge, but the tedium and repetitiveness sets in very early so its hard to get excited over a game that lacks creative energy.
