GoPets: Vacation Island Review

It's not the worst vacation we've had.

Closing Comments

We like the idea of an Animal Crossing/Nintendogs combination, but GoPets: Vacation Island isn't quite the perfect pairing we had hoped. There just isn't a lot of game there. The amount of pets is extremely limited, and there are only a handful of minigames. They did a great job on the customization options, and the ability to send your pet out and communicate globally through pictograms is awesome. If there were more game here, or if taking care of the pets required a little more effort, we'd be playing this for a while. Still, it's a new idea that can, and should, be picked up and improved by a developer. But this vacation is over far too soon.

5.5 Presentation
Hundreds of in game objects, and only three pets. What's up with that?

6.0 Graphics
The style is cute, but very basic. Pets do weird things like walk on water.

5.0 Sound
The music is fun but a bit repetitive. the sound effects can get a little grating, like living in the house of a cat lady.

5.5 Gameplay
There's just not much to do here on the island. It's awesome that we can interact with pets globally, but there's very little interaction to be had.

7.5 Lasting Appeal
Want your pet to look sweet? You're going to be playing for a long time. Or time traveling. Cheater.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2008

The 'Winning Eleven' part may be gone, but the mediocre soccer remains.

Closing Comments

The Nintendo DS isn't really a sports powerhouse game system, but it really deserves better than this. The original Pro Evolution Soccer wasn't anywhere near the quality product that Konami's been pushing for the current generation consoles, but we were kind and forgave the game a bit since it was a first-generation product. Version two isn't much better than the original, and though it does tweak things to make it a better playing game, the fact that it took the team a whole year to come up with these minor enhancements is incredibly disappointing.

5.0 Presentation
A slight bump up in features from last year, including a very Japanese "Gacha" mode where you unlock items via capsule machine and tokens.

5.5 Graphics
The game gets a slight tweak from last year, but honestly you probably won't notice much difference.

4.5 Sound
Once again, no commentary, basic music, and only minimal sound effects. They've been made slightly higher quality this time around, but still, nothing much to write home about.

6.0 Gameplay
The stiff gameplay of 2007's been loosened up a bit, but maybe a little too much in places.

6.5 Lasting Appeal
The game hits online a second time, but it seems the critical mass isn't there for random match-ups. Still, you've got single cart for basic local matches, and multicart for the serious.

Double Sequence: The D-Virus Invasion Review

One of the most baffling puzzle games on the DS. That's not a good thing.

http://ds.ign.com/ar...3/863675p1.html

Imagen Enviada

Closing Comments

It might be unique, but the game is too cool for its own good. Something's not right when the limp gameplay gets completely lost in the game's universe, and Double Sequence is a bland puzzler lost in a sea of overindulgent style and menus.

2.0 Presentation
This is a perfect example of overindulging in presentation. Trying to figure out how to get from one puzzle to the next is a confusing chore.

5.0 Graphics
Not much beyond colored squares and virus sketches.

6.5 Sound
European-influenced rhythm tunes accompany the puzzles. Not bad.

4.0 Gameplay
It's certainly unique, but it's far too obscure a concept and the design itself lacks an addictive hook.

6.0 Lasting Appeal
Apparently there are hundreds of puzzles in here with the ability to make your own. So, there's at least that going for it.

M&M's Kart Racing Review

It melted in our hands.

Closing Comments

Commercial mascots make terrible videogames. M&Ms should be the mascot for bad mascot games. M&M's Kart Racing has nothing to do with the candies, and barely uses the license at all. Even if there had been original characters, this game looks, plays and sounds terrible. It brings nothing new to kart racing, and doesnt even manage to get the fundamentals right. Stay away from these candies, they'll spoil your appetite.

1.0 Presentation
Do you guys even know what M&Ms are?

4.0 Graphics
The game uses the same sprites for melted chocolate as it does for fluid from a drainage pipe. Eew.

3.5 Sound
One song, and one voice effect. Over and over...

3.0 Gameplay
The game seems to forget you're even playing, and barely tries to race against you.

4.0 Lasting Appeal
It's so short that it will only last a couple hours, at most.

Harvest Moon DS Cute Review

There's a female lead, and the rest is quite literally history.

http://ds.ign.com/ar...4/864320p1.html

Closing Comments

Harvest Moon has been a solid adventure in the portable world for over a decade, starting first on the original Game Boy, and progressing to the GBC and GBA. Even still, each generation added something new to the mix, starting with simple color display, and ending with a full immersive town and nearly endless replay value. On DS, however, it seems like the development team simply added basic bottom screen item management and a few animal interactions and called it a day. The main bulk of the game is still single screen, uses a ton of the same assets from the Friends of Mineral Town world, and though the game is supposed to be set up in a different town, a ton of the characters mysteriously make cameos.

With Cute, players can expect the same girl-friendly transition that we saw with More Friends of Mineral Town, as there are a few changes made in the most basic of areas, but the core game is still identical. Its still a fun game, but like its predecessor (which is now a year and a half old), Harvest Moon DS Cute feels more like a touch-enabled version of Friends of Mineral Town, and less like the true Harvest Moon DS experience were waiting for. Weve played and loved Rune Factory, and we know the true successor is on the way as well, with Harvest Moon: Island of Happiness releasing in Japan within the next few months. Hopefully we see that making a DS debut as quickly as possible, as were now three and a half years into the DS life cycle, and weve still yet to get a true 3D Harvest Moon. Now if youll excuse us, were going back to Rune Factory, and we suggest you do the same.

4.5 Presentation
The overall farm management still works fine, but the interface is far too weak for the potential of DS. A few touch interactions aside, its still a GBA game.

5.0 Graphics
Identical to the original Harvest Moon DS, which already looks exactly like a GBA game.

5.0 Sound
It was simple a year and a half ago, and it shows its age even more now.

6.0 Gameplay
The gameplay may be strikingly similar to the GBA versions, but it still stands the test of time. Graphics arent everything, but for Harvest Moon DS its all about gameplay.

5.5 Lasting Appeal
Its Harvest Moon DS again, this time with a girl lead. The series is amazing if youve never played it before, but this is all repeat gaming if you have.

Let's Ride! Friends Forever Review

If that's the case, then you should find some better friends.

http://ds.ign.com/ar...4/864145p1.html

Closing Comments

It's time for this design to die. This same, shallow horseback riding design has appeared as a mini-game piece of several recent THQ-published titles and has never been compelling. And it's at its worst here, where the entire game design builds up to its reveal by locking down even the possibility of riding until you've invested a ridiculous amount of tedious caretaking time. Ugh. It's exasperating. Don't go anywhere near this game. Let's Ride? Let's not.

3.0 Presentation
Bad. The game's name is "Let's Ride!" and yet there's no way to do so right away. Error screens restrict your choices for a long time.

3.0 Graphics
Uninteresting, poor 3D work that is most often displayed from an excessively zoomed-out, birds-eye perspective.

2.0 Sound
There are no sound effects here. You wash the horse, no sounds of water. You feed the horse, no sounds of chomping. Ridiculous.

2.0 Gameplay
The horseback riding mini-game of past Paws & Claws titles returns as the core of this new game. And it's horrible. A truly uncompelling design.

3.5 Lasting Appeal
There are several layers of championship events and the like, for those players mindless or bored enough to slog through the tedium of it all.

2.0
Terrible OVERALL

Backyard Baseball '09 Review

Atari's latest Backyard offering is a decent offering of pocket sandlot.

http://ds.ign.com/ar...4/864681p1.html

Imagen Enviada

Closing Comments

The Backyard series was far from perfect on GBA, and has stunk pretty bad on DS thus far, with the exception of Backyard Basketball. Usually these games are quick little cash cows that are rushed out the door, but every once in a while we find one that stands above the rest. Backyard Baseball 09 works, and while it still has the same general shortcomings that arrive with every Backyard title year after year (weak visual design, horrible audio, and extremely simple interface and presentation), the gameplay is there this time around, and its due in a large part to the intuitive touch controls. Its not perfect by any means, but for this years baseball head-to-head Backyard isnt looking too bad. The control works, there are some decent moments of fun to be had, and theres even multi-card two player should you find someone else with the game. A little effort goes a long way.

4.0 Presentation
Oh so plain. See any of the previous DS (or console) versions, and you know what to expect.

6.0 Graphics
The 3D is decent, but the characters still dont really look like the pros by any standard. 2D work is weak though, so it ends up being a mish-mash of assets.

3.0 Sound
Apparently the sound team was busy with Backyard Basketball. This one has weak VO, very limited music, and moments of complete silence. Poor.

6.5 Gameplay
Its basic, but it works. Touch the screen to swing, position your pitch with a little ball icon, and tap to throw/run. Easy, and reliable.

6.5 Lasting Appeal
Youll find two player multiplayer (multi-card), season mode, pick-up games, and a decent little fantasy roster. There are even mini-games, which are fun, yet simple.

Lost in Blue 3 Review

We've lost our motivation.

http://ds.ign.com/ar...4/864726p1.html

Imagen Enviada

Closing Comments

There are two parts to Lost in Blue 3: the parts that are the same and thus boring, and the parts that are different and thus overly tedious. This entry into the series is the most repetitive and tiring yet, which is a shame because it also has the most interesting characters and storyline by far. If you've never played a Lost in Blue title then there's no reason to get this one over a cheaper prequel, but it's probably best to let this title get lost in the sea of a bargain bin.

7.0 Presentation
The story is much better, and the more cartoony character design works.

7.0 Graphics
It's the same old island, but it doesn't look bad.

6.5 Sound
There's some minor voice work now, though it never seems to match with the text.

5.0 Gameplay
Why is surviving so boring? And why is everybody except our guy so stupid?

6.5 Lasting Appeal
If the story keeps you interested, the game is fairly long with multiple stoylines. Though it's only because it takes days to make any progress.

The World Ends With You UK Review

Is Square Enix's latest game the beginning of another blockbusting RPG franchise?

http://ds.ign.com/ar...5/865109p1.html

Closing Comments

What can be said, however, is that The World Ends With You combines Squares hallmark character development and story with the collectability of Pokémon, and ties together innovative game design with the urban cool of Jet Set Radio. Indeed, the games appropriation of real-world themes and issues are at the heart of its success. Its a celebration of modern life, and like modern life, it can be messy, complicated and confusing, and you might find yourself beset by minor disappointments. But you get out what you put in, and at its heart is an important message about making human connections in a world that can sometimes seem harsh and uncaring. Which, when you think about it, is pretty cool. And if you dont want to think about it, well then you can just sit back and enjoy the game design.

9.5 Presentation
The style, the setting, the sounds, the characters everything about The World Ends With You is slick and engaging.

8.5 Graphics
In some respects the graphics come up against the technical limits of the DS, but theyre brought vibrantly to life thanks to an excellent art style.

8.5 Sound
The soundtrack offers the same sort of eclectic urban cool as Jet Set Radio, and it works just as well here to create a sense of style and place.

8.5 Gameplay
Touchscreen niggles aside, there are about a million brilliant things about the games design, but the best is the way they all capture the confusing bustle of modern life.

8.5 Lasting Appeal
The game spans a decent length, but theres also plenty of replay value thanks to all the collectibles and different score rankings.

Petz Bunnyz Review

Ubisoft's Hamsterz grew long ears.

http://ds.ign.com/ar...4/864482p1.html

Imagen Enviada

Closing Comments

So, as Petz Bunnyz is essentially the same game as Hamsterz Life, it deserves the same overall score that Hamsterz Life earned. It's not so insulting to be getting the same product again as we saw last year, as Hamsterz Life was truly unique, odd and compelling when compared to more mundane, realistic virtual pet designs. But let's not see this carbon-copying strategy used again, Ubisoft. If "Petz Gerbilz" shows up in early 2009 with this same design again, we're going to have problems.

7.0 Presentation

Everything is organized well into accessible menus. A 2D anime girl named Bonnie offers advice through tutorials, and hosts the different mini-games.

7.0 Graphics
Solid, if simple, 3D work illustrates the virtual pet aspects of Bunnyz's gameplay, while 2D anime-styled visuals are employed for the mini-games.

6.0 Sound
As with last year's Hamsterz Life, your pets here speak to you in English. But none of it is audible it's all just text displayed in word balloons.

7.0 Gameplay
A fun and totally unrealistic virtual pet design that has you teaching your digital rabbits to speak English, among other random and off-the-wall activities.

6.5 Lasting Appeal
As you have no control over when certain mini-games and other elements appear, you may be encouraged to keep playing for a longer period of time.

7.0
Decent OVERALL

Professor Layton and the Curious Village AU Review

My brain hurts.

Closing Comments

Professor Layton and the Curious Village is a wonderful game. It really is. If you're into your brain teasers, then this one will have you hooked. The inclusion of a narrative framework is a stroke of brilliance too and the simple but pleasing presentation is perfect for all ages. The series is big in Japan and that's usually a good measuring stick for a franchise on the move. As the first game in the series to reach the West, it makes me hungry for the sequel. If only my poor brain could measure up. To the library!

8.5 Presentation
Lovely, hand-crafted and nicely considered menu system and a 'classic' take on adventure gaming.

8.0 Graphics
Though not technically overwhelming, the artistry cannot be denied. Lovely anime cutscenes too - we just want more of them next time.

8.0 Sound
The midi score is impressively well composed - they capture the pseudo-French village feel with loads of charisma.

8.5 Gameplay
Outside of the hints section, the puzzles are ingenious and the point-and-click gameplay is as solid as ever. Awesome and fun to boot!

7.5 Lasting Appeal
Plenty to see and do, but very little replay value by the nature of the genre. Still, solving all the puzzles will take a fair while.

Championship Pony

Yet another option for young aspiring equestrians.

http://ds.ign.com/ar...4/864481p1.html

Closing Comments
The blue circle mechanic used to guide your horse's movements through the DS touch screen was a step in the right direction, but Championship Pony needed more than just that one trick. Even the most promising and accessible gameplay mechanics have to be followed up with some kind of depth, and this game just doesn't have it there are only three types of events to compete in and the experience is over far too quickly. Once again, horse-loving players of Nintendo's dual-screened system will be better off betting on a different game.

5.0 Presentation
Same old, same old. A horse-owning game that lets you create a basic character and own a basic horse. There's no extra hook here to make it more interesting.

6.0 Graphics
The horses look good, but your rider seems lifeless. A 3D swoop-and-zoom scene gives some spice to your menu selections.

6.5 Sound
Pleasant sound and easy-going music that never annoys, though nothing is particularly memorable.

6.0 Gameplay
The blue circle control mechanic is intuitive and shows promise. It's a fair start to a more robust design there just needs to be more added to it.

3.0 Lasting Appeal
Only three competitive events, repeated only six times. Championship Pony takes less than an afternoon to experience completely, and then it's done.
