My Secret World Review

Wanna know a secret? It's not for boys.

Closing Comments

My Secret World is a solid diary application on the DS. It has a lot features for sharing and comparing with friends, clearly influenced by the rise in social networking and blogging (which may render this software completely obsolete). The extra features like the quizzes and mini-games, range from so-so to completely worthless, which makes the multiplayer modes kind of disappointing. Still it's about the same price as all those other electronic diaries on the market and has a lot more customization options, so if your girl already has a DS and wants an electronic diary, this seems like a good choice, just don't expect much more.

7.0 Presentation
The options for the diary are numerous, allowing you to customize however you want. It's weird that the game makes me be a girl even though there are boy avatars in the game.

6.5 Graphics
The style is simple and very colorful. The menu changes color and theme based on selectable moods.

5.0 Sound
The sound effects and music are pretty lame, but not particularly annoying.

4.0 Gameplay
Every thing that is actually supposed to be a game is boring and tedious.

6.0 Lasting Appeal
Theoretically this diary could last you years. Realistically, a couple weeks before you unlock all the stickers and get bored,

Zombie BBQ Review

Hope you like your brains well done.

But the controls end up being more of an interesting experiment than a bother. Overall, I really like Zombie BBQ's art style, sense of humor, and solid shmup gameplay. Publisher Destineer was wise to pick this one up. Like all games in this genre, the appeal can be limited -- you shoot and dodge, that's about it. But those of us that get it, get it. If that's you, you should get Zombie BBQ. Where else are you going to find a sexy Little Red Riding hood murdering her zombified grandmother with a shotgun?

8.5 Presentation
Great premise and art style. The story doesn't make any sense, but that just adds to the playfulness of the game.

8.0 Graphics
A nice mix of 3D environments and 2D sprites. Not a lot of special effects, though, and there is a bit of slowdown (common for games of this type).

7.5 Sound
Cool sound design in menus and cut scenes. The music is passable horror rock but you probably won't be humming these tunes.

9.0 Gameplay
Although the player really only does two things (shoot and dodge), each level keeps throwing more inventive obstacles at Red. Very challenging, but also very rewarding.

7.5 Lasting Appeal
The game is of respectable length, but doesn't offer much past the single-player experience.

No lo sé la verdad, tendría que mirarlo, pero tiene una pinta de ser muy adictivo, a ver si tengo la ocasión de probarlo. ;)

Ninjatown Review

Go to town with this fun Tower Defense-style game.

Closing Comments

Borrowing an existing game design can work if you inject it with your own personality, and that's exactly what Ninjatown has done. Tower Defense is already a fun game, and most things in life can be improved by adding ninjas. The brief devil invasions here (around 10 minutes each) are perfect for portable gaming. Add in the friendly single- and multicart multiplayer modes and Ninjatown offers a pretty high quality of life.

8.5 Presentation
Great art style, lots of personality, and cool multiplayer modes.

7.5 Graphics
Functional but minimal 16-bit style visuals. Would have been nice to see a little more flair in the ninja attacks and animations.

7.5 Sound
16-bit Japanese jams.

9.0 Gameplay
Solid strategic, resource management gameplay. The pacing is pitch perfect, introducing a new layer of gameplay with each level.

8.5 Lasting Appeal
A lengthy single-player story plus fun multiplayer modes.

Crash: Mind Over Mutant Review

A huge step backwards from last year's Crash of the Titans.

Imagen Enviada

http://ds.ign.com/ar...4/924588p1.html

Closing Comments

Crash has had one bumpy ride on the Nintendo DS, and I had high hopes that last year's Crash of the Titans would lead to bigger and better things for the character. But Vivendi/Activision seriously dropped the ball on this one last year's great outing was apparently a one time thing, and we're back to a crummy addition to the once big and popular franchise.

3.0 Presentation
Stupid story told in a stupid way: talking heads that look like they're having an epileptic seizure, with character grunts and groans instead of full voice-over.

6.0 Graphics
The Crash redesign still looks cool in his second outing, but the game fails to impress with huge step backwards from last year's 3D engine.

3.5 Sound
Annoying, random character garble with really awful renditions of what the music composer thought sounded what would fit for a Crash game.

3.0 Gameplay
Boring, drab, uninspired platformer with none of what made last year's game so good on DS.

4.5 Lasting Appeal
If you can stand the game and want to see it through to the end, it's not terribly short.

3.2

FIFA Soccer 09 Review

The DS version continues its quality with subtle improvements and additions.

Imagen Enviada

http://ds.ign.com/ar...4/924796p1.html

Closing Comments

I've said it before and I'll say it again: if you want the true soccer experience take it to the consoles and the big screen. But for on-the-go play the Nintendo DS version of FIFA Soccer is still a great diversion even with its limited capabilities. The series is taken seriously by the development team and it shows, and this year the team's tech has improved significantly with better visuals. Considering Exient handles most of EA's sports outings (and a few non-sports products like Skate It) I can't wait to see how this engine improvement will apply to other DS games by the studio.

8.0 Presentation
A lot of the cool presentation elements remain the same from last year. Some additions include a cool shot meter at the half and end to show where the ball was kicked during a match.

8.0 Graphics
An already smooth experience becomes even smoother with an engine running at 60 frames with no real drop in visual quality.

8.0 Sound
The commentary from last year feels recycled, but you can get your kicks by turning him German.

8.0 Gameplay
Soccer continues to do well on the DS thanks to Exient. Plays just as good as last year, maybe a little too similar to be worth a double dip.

9.0 Lasting Appeal
Everything great about multiplayer in last year's game is great again here. Online and local work and work extremely well.

8.0
Impressive OVERALL

Away: Shuffle Dungeon Review

The DS is dealt an interesting, but flawed, action RPG.

Imagen Enviada

http://ds.ign.com/ar...5/925167p1.html

Closing Comments

As a game critic, I want to encourage developers to try new ideas. On the other hand, I also have to point out when those ideas don't exactly work. Away has an interesting premise, nice visuals, great audio, and an original take on an established genre. That original take isn't strong enough to carry the player throughout the entire game, though, and eventually the gimmick wears thin. Rather than being excited about the next dungeon, you may find yourself thinking, "Do I have to?" Still, I bet more than a few gamers out there will be won over by Away's high production values and charm.

8.5 Presentation
Away has a unique art style and everything from the audio to the in-game menus are well done.

8.0 Graphics
A nice mix of 2D dungeons and 3D overworld exploration.

8.5 Sound
Great music and some light voice acting draw the player into this mysterious world.

6.0 Gameplay
The interesting "shuffle" mechanic turns out to be a gimmick that gets old too soon.

7.5 Lasting Appeal
The story is of good length and a co-op boss rush mode is available to earn special items.

6.1
Passable OVERALL

TouchMaster 2 Review

More casual games from Midway that improves on the original.

Imagen Enviada

http://ds.ign.com/ar...5/925239p1.html

Closing Comments

Ultimately, Touchmaster 2 improves on everything about Touchmaster, but that doesn't mean it's the only game to get there are fun games in both, so both versions are recommended. Touchmaster 2 just presents its games better thanks to the developer taking its time to address all the issues we had with the first Touchmaster experience.

7.0 Presentation
Touchmaster 2 offers up a better interface than the original, with tighter visuals and more interesting extras like a trophy system.

7.0 Graphics
Nothing gorgeous, but at least the art's sharper this time around.

7.0 Sound
Mellow but generic music keeps things from getting eerie quiet.

8.0 Gameplay
Large variety of games that varies from fun to meh. But mostly fun.

7.5 Lasting Appeal

The trophy system keeps things interesting, and if you want to play multiplayer in some games this year's version supports single-card download play.

7.9
Good OVERALL

Mechanic Master Review

It's like the Incredible Machine, but with aliens and a bit less polish.

Imagen Enviada

http://ds.ign.com/ar...5/925251p1.html

Closing Comments

Mechanic Master is a good, solid game on the Nintendo DS that fills the void of not having The Incredible Machine on the handheld. The sloppy visuals are a good clue that someone else can do a better job at the same style of game on the DS, but that's up to Sierra/Vivendi/Activision to accept the challenge in bringing the original game to the portable. Until that happens, Mechanic Master does the job nicely with some really good challenges in a solid touch-screen interface.

6.0 Presentation
The game feels like a homebrew project that Midway picked up on the cheap. It's a little rough around the edges.

4.5 Graphics
This is where the game sort of stumbles: the visuals. Awkward sprites look like they were drawn by a first-year art student. And the lack of animation makes everything feel clunky.

7.0 Sound
The visuals might suck, but the cheesy jazz and generic music is surprisingly catchy.

8.0 Gameplay
The Incredible Machine comes to the DS in a shameless clone. This clone offers some really fun and challenging puzzles with the ability to make your own.

8.0 Lasting Appeal
If you're into the creation process, this game has legs because you can build all sorts of fun machines and puzzles and save them to cart.

7.6
Good OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)
