Chicken Hunter Review

Cluck this game.

Closing Comments

Chicken Hunter isn't a game. It's five game demos that Mumbo Jumbo is trying to get suckers to pay for. Playing through every single game takes approximately 15 minutes (at most) and then there is nothing to do. No multiplayer. No hard mode. Nothing. There's just so little content here, which makes the overall lack of quality even more insulting. If the developers were going to make a game with barely any content, they could have at least made it good content.

4.5 Presentation
Very little presentation to speak of. There are no explanations for what these games are.

6.0 Graphics
The little 3D chickens are cute, but identical. The same background is reused for nearly every game.

4.5 Sound
One ambient noise track and only about half the necessary sound effects. Plus a weird lounge singer song at the beginning.

3.5 Gameplay
Each game is a one level minigame that is over in about three minutes on average.

1.5 Lasting Appeal
There are 15 minutes of gameplay.

Bratz: Super Babyz Review

Off-brand Barbie Muppet Babies meet the Justice League.

http://ds.ign.com/ar...9/859236p1.html

Closing Comments

Bratz: Super Babyz is a limited game with a confusing concept and shallow gameplay. Its premise of transforming the Bratz girl character into babies and then giving them all superpowers is just plain odd, and made worse by the fact that the basic walk-about gameplay doesn't seem to support anything "super" at all. The game has a few redeeming qualities, as the technical execution of the 3D exploration sequences holds merit and the random inclusion of a Legend of Zelda-inspired dungeon sequence are noteworthy and positive. But as a whole, only the youngest gamers or those girls who are die-hard fans of the Bratz: Super Babyz DVD need to pay attention to this one.

3.0 Presentation
Bratz + babies + superpowers doesn't work. And it doesn't help when aliens, rubber ducks and buying carrots with pennies get thrown in either.

7.0 Graphics
From a technical standpoint, the 3D exploration in Super Babyz is pretty good. This is much better and more solid tech than you'd expect in a Bratz game.

5.5 Sound
A mediocre score. There are unlockable "Hip Beatz," but they do little to redeem the overall audio experience.

4.0 Gameplay
Limited and disjointed. The core gameplay simply has you walking from one place to the next, which would be unengaging for all but the youngest players.

4.0 Lasting Appeal
There are a fair set of missions to finish in Super Babyz, and extra DVD-derived media to unlock. The dress-up wardrobe is limited to only a few outfits.

4.0

Command and Destroy Review

Definitely not the best advertising for real time strategy on the Nintendo DS.

http://ds.ign.com/ar...0/860204p1.html

Closing Comments

In the right hands, real-time strategy and the Nintendo DS could go together like chocolate and peanut butter. But these arent the right hands: Command and Destroy has all the makings of a good RTS, but the awful controls and the even worse save system kill the fun. Even with fixed controls the game would never have been as good as any of the classic PC games, but it certainly would be worth playing. Instead, it ends up a tremendously huge missed opportunity, a big tease to a genre that still has yet to be exploited on the Nintendo DS.

1.5 Presentation
Password save? PASSWORD SAVE??!

4.5 Graphics
At first glance the game looks a helluva lot like Command & Conquer. And it keeps looks like Command & Conquer. Except for the bad character art and troops that are hard to tell apart.

5.0 Sound
Voice samples read from the same script as Command & Conquer. ("Construction complete." "Your base is under attack.") The soundtrack that plays during the action's pretty lame.

4.0 Gameplay
The core mechanics are there, but it's all bogged down by awful controls.

6.5 Lasting Appeal
If you're willing to trudge through the missions, and if you can find a second copy for one-on-one multiplayer, Command and Destroy's got legs.

4.0
Poor OVERALL

Best of Tests DS Review

Not the best. Not even close.

There are countless websites that offer IQ tests that actually give you a score to brag about, and most of them are free! Or, for 20 bucks, you can buy Best of Tests DS, and sit through a questionnaire with all the difficulty of a Preschool Entrance Exam. If you're afraid you might be a complete moron, feel free to pick it up, since the game will never tell you how stupid you are, or anything else for that matter.

2.0 Presentation
Does the disembodied head have a name... or a purpose?

5.5 Graphics
Simple, clean cut interface, but nothing interesting to see here.

2.5 Sound
Like Yanni coming out of low grade speakers.

1.0 Gameplay
What gameplay? Why would we pay for a test that doesn't give us results?

2.0 Lasting Appeal
No progress tracking, or even actual training to help you improve. The only reason this game isn't done in 5 minutes is because it forces you through the easy modes first.

2.0
Terrible OVERALL

Barnyard Blast Review

This pork has some chops.

http://ds.ign.com/ar...0/860541p1.html

Closing Comments

Barnyard Blast has a lot going for it, but unfortunately not the most important things. Hopefully the developers can take their great sense of humor and old-school roots and move this genre into new territory, rather than get stuck in the past. Retro gamers might want to stop by the barnyard, but there are already several, better classic-flavored platformers on the DS. If gaming in the past isn't your thing, you'll want to pass on the pork.

8.0 Presentation
Great sense of humor in an overall nostalgic package.

6.5 Graphics
The visuals lack the personality of the writing.

6.5 Sound
The music is very reminiscent of the 16-bit era, but the tunes aren't catchy enough. The sound effects are nice, though.

6.5 Gameplay
You've been down this road before. The game's got heart, but doesn't bring anything new to the table.

6.5 Lasting Appeal
Six levels and no multiplayer. The game is challenging but once it's over, it's over.

7.2

SEGA Superstars Tennis Review

Sonic and Co. hit the court for singles and doubles action. How'd this SEGA celebration turn out on DS?

http://ds.ign.com/ar...0/860593p1.html

Closing Comments

Perhaps Mario Tennis on the Game Boy Advance has spoiled us. We appreciate all the little nods to past SEGA titles, but these little things aren't really tied into the core tennis experience. As solid a tennis game SEGA Superstars Tennis ended up on the Nintendo DS, it feels far more hollow than a celebratory "Yay us!" game should be.

5.5 Presentation
The designers fail to offer a tutorial for the game's controls, and the SEGA celebration seems like a somewhat dead party.

7.5 Graphics
The courts aren't as lively as the console versions, but they're still bright, vivid, and the engine runs at a slick 60.

7.5 Sound
Some rather good choices of tunes from the past games, and they're played out well through the DS hardware. But they're not "tennis tunes," that's for sure.

6.5 Gameplay
Watered down Virtua Tennis. And even more watered down compared to the console version. The mini-game selection's pretty cool, but somewhat disjointed from the core experience.

7.0 Lasting Appeal
You can play through the limited single player progression or compete against friends via single and multi cart support.

6.9
Passable OVERALL

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates AU Review

Another solid adventure, or is it Final Fantasy Jr.?

http://ds.ign.com/ar...0/860618p1.html

Imagen Enviada

Closing Comments

With all the attention given to the story, setting and presentation, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates tends to slip up in the fundamental gameplay department. Things like AI and cluttered controls will test your patience, but never enough to sour the experience or remove the sheen of quality. This is another solid effort from Square Enix one that actually gets surprisingly dark as it goes on. With a few unlockable bonus modes, tremendous item creation depth and a combat system that caters to hardcore FF fans, there's more to Rings of Fate than the childish presentation suggests.

8.0 Presentation
Very tidy use of menus and overall look of the game. The title screen and opening cinematics are particularly slick.

8.0 Graphics
Utterly gorgous on an artistic level; this engine is a step forwards for Square Enix on DS. Unfortunately, the framerate does plummet when things get hectic - which can be frequent.

8.0 Sound
Irk. Those voices, although appreciated, will make your ears bleed. But the environmental sound effects and score are superb.

7.5 Gameplay
As solid as the adventuring is, the controls and AI issues are too frequent and obvious to overlook. We'd be doing you a disservice to gloss over that stuff.

8.0 Lasting Appeal
You get a lot of bang for your buck with Ring of Fates. Plenty to unlock, lots of multiplayer fun and a deep, rich story. Enjoy.

Nanostray 2 Review en IGN

Shin'en doesn't stray too far from tried-and-true shooter mechanics.

http://ds.ign.com/ar...1/861197p1.html

Closing Comments

If you're a DS-owning shooter fan, Nanostray 2 is a must buy. Not only is it a perfectly able shmup, it's also the only game in town. It's not inventive enough to catch the attention of the rest of the world, though. What it does it does well, but it's all been done before. Of course, in games, being fun is more important than being new, and Nanostray 2 is definitely fun. While the visuals are flashy, it's a shame the developers couldn't give the vehicles more character. The audio department helps to make up for the dull character design, though. Let's hope Shin'en's next DS shooter won't take another three years.

8.0 Presentation
Lots of game modes and weapon options. The vehicle design is rather generic, though.

8.5 Graphics
Even the title screen is impressive. Plenty of flashy business going on without any slow down.

8.0 Sound
The music is decent, but it's the sound effects and voice acting that really sell the experience.

7.5 Gameplay
Fairly standard as far as shooters go, but still fun.

8.5 Lasting Appeal
The story mode is a good length for a shooter. Beyond that there is a cool challenge mode and mini-games to unlock. Plus, single- and multi-card multiplayer.

8.1
Impressive OVERALL

Anno 1701: Dawn of Discovery Review

The New World gets a do-over.

http://ds.ign.com/ar...1/861666p1.html

Closing Comments

Anno 1701 offers a rich, portable strategy experience. It rests comfortably on well-worn games and gameplay mechanics, but fans of the genre should find what they're looking for. Establishing the New World can be frustrating because of a lack of explanation for certain features, but the perks -- great graphics, great sound, and deep gameplay -- make up for the shortcomings.

6.5 Presentation
This is a pretty deep game, but a lot of features and mechanics go unexplained. The controls work well for the most part.

8.5 Graphics
Bright, vibrant, and charming. There's a good amount of detail and activity going on, which you can see when you zoom in.

8.0 Sound
The catchy tunes change with the mood of your people. Sound effects are a bit generic, though.

7.5 Gameplay
Nothing new here, but it's still enjoyable. Exploring the New World is satifying and suitably challenging.

8.0 Lasting Appeal
The Story Mode is long, and you can play forever in Freeplay. Then there's multiplayer for some competive settling.

7.5
Good OVERALL

Spitfire Heroes: Tales of the Royal Air Force Review

We do a barrel roll... into a canyon wall.

http://ds.ign.com/ar...2/862379p1.html

Imagen Enviada

Closing Comments

We're not sure whom Spitfire Heroes: Tales of the Royal Air Force is supposed to appeal to. It's a history based game so it's not going to have the aero acrobatics and gun power that Ace Combat or Star Fox do. And it is a strictly single plane endeavor so it might not resonate with people that actually thought they were going to be the air force. It handles well enough, and the missions provide a hefty amount of challenge, but it's ultimately repetitive and short. Spitfire Heroes is yet another mediocre flight action game for the Nintendo DS.

4.0 Presentation
There is a story, but the game doesn't accurately show the battles it's presenting.

5.5 Graphics
The sky looks good, the ground looks awful.

7.0 Sound
Explosion and gunfire are really the only sound effects. Some nice music.

5.5 Gameplay
Some pretty solid missions and dogfighting. The planes feel slow, and the gameplay is very repetitive.

5.0 Lasting Appeal
Short campaign and very limited multiplayer. Hard as hell though, so you won't blast through it.

5.5
Mediocre OVERALL
